Full information

Calstock Arts is a community arts centre located in a beautifully converted Chapel on the banks of the River Tamar.

We programme a wide range of events including folk, jazz, classical music, comedy, film, theatre, talks and exhibitions. We have a fully licensed bar and pre-event food is now available for some events.

In addition to our ticketed events we also have Gallery Bar Specials. These feature live music and other events from well-known and emerging performers in the south west.

The Old Chapel is an ideal venue for a variety of community events, exhibitions, conferences, weddings and private parties.

About us
Calstock Arts was established in 2010 and is a not-for-profit arts venue. It is largely staffed by a dedicated team of volunteers. Initially set up as a Community Interest Company we converted to Charity status in 2015. Our programme is varied and includes folk, jazz and classical music, dance, films, talks, comedy, workshops and exhibitions.

Our home is The Old Chapel in Calstock. This was previously a Methodist chapel built in 1910 but completely refurbished by the previous owners, Peterloo Poets, in the late 1990s – a time when grants were more easily available than nowadays! We’re certainly grateful for this as it resulted in our iconic picture window that looks across the river Tamar to Devon and has visitors gasping in admiration. We have superb natural acoustics, which are greatly appreciated by both performers and audiences. The main auditorium seats 120.

We offer a variety of performances that include nationally recognised artists more often seen in much larger venues. We’re also proud of our record of showcasing local and younger performers. Around 60 events are put on each year and these are split fairly equally between ticketed and free entry. Most of the free entry events are part of our Gallery Bar Special series and all we request is a donation which goes directly to the performers.

In addition to events we also hire out our facilities for a range of uses. These include weddings (we have a civil wedding licence), meetings, receptions, parties, conferences, workshops and corporate events.

The recent development of the lower ground floor, below the auditorium, has created The Kelly Room – a multi-purpose space with a well-equipped kitchen.

Become a Volunteer

Calstock Arts puts on over 60 events each year. It also has a busy schedule of hiring out the building for meetings, weddings and classes. On top of that this large listed building requires a great deal of care and maintenance.

Calstock Arts is a volunteer organisation and its success depends entirely on the time, skills and energy of its team of volunteers.

Even if you can spare only an hour a week please do come and talk to us. We have a large range of tasks that need to be undertaken. If you would like to learn more about being a volunteer do get in touch.
